  • Database Abstraction
Posted under Development by Sycophant on Saturday October 07 2000 @ 06:27AM EDT
Development As a proud and happy user of PostgreSQL, I am very keen to see a Database Abstraction layer added soon, it is now top of the TODO list... How far away is it? Have you any idea which you will use, or are you going to code your own?

I hate to moan about these things, when normally I would try to fix them myself, but I simply don't have time at the moment...

    I really can't stand PHPLib.

In my experience, the abstraction layer used by Phorum is quite effective, and there are at least three others on zend.com which look promising...

may i ask why you dislike PHPLib? it has everything done already, user management, session, permissions, and a few others. not to mention their template class is extremely fast. the other alternative i see as a db abstraction is metabase from UpperDesign http://www.upperdesign.com

phorum's db abstraction is my suggestion too...

phpWebLog is a good alternative for systems like PHPSlash that require PHPLib to handle all these things. That was one of the things I had in mind at the time this was first started. I'd like to keep it independant. I haven't put alot of thought into db abstraction at this point, so this is indeed a great thread to keep active.

I use phplib myself.. I am probably a week away from releasing my pecknet web site... Its a slashdot/phpweblog/thatware rip off too.. I have been using it for over a year and have tweaked it here and there.. I have been spending the last month making it mass consumable.. (At least I hope so). My intent is not to kill myslef making releases.. I just figure if people are interested in it they can use it.. hell if I have anything unique phpweblog can borrow the ideas/code whatever.. after all thats whats so nice about GPL!!!
The thing I'm doing with phplib though is I'm including a version with my code... Its just easier and you don't have to edit path variables and auto_prepend scripts...
Also you will notice that I use mod_rewrite (no I'm pretty sure I'm not vulnerable to the attack) to feed the arguments to my php code. Makes my stats package give me useful data!
