By charles (---.ihug.com.au) on Friday April 20 2001 @ 01:52AM EDT [ General ] I have found that when I turn the topics off, every time a new story is contributed it topic (in the mysql database) is set to zero, not 1 as it should be. This just means that nobody can comment on the story because the add comment section is not there...
how can I fix this?

Gee, that doesn't sound good. I'll take a look on Tuesday when I return home. Hopefully someone else can lend a hand until then...

I have been looking around my self, but as I am no wizz when it comes to php it has not been easy :) I have fixed it sort of, I enabled topics but edited include/blocks.inc.php so it no longer writes the topic block.
this is only really good for me, becuase I don't want topics, but it confirms that it is a problem with the story being set to topic '0'.

This is normal as far as how the topic/message systemn works.
A story is tied to a topic by it's id. If topics are off, then the story is tied to topic 0.
If you're correct, the bug must be where you can't comment on stories with topic 0.
